Biography

David Shyovitz (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 2011) is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Northwestern University and the Director of the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies. His research centers on medieval European intellectual and cultural history, with a particular emphasis on Jewish history and Jewish-Christian relations. He is the author of "Remembrance Wonders: Nature Supernatural in Medieval Ashkenaz" (Philadelphia, 2017), which received the John Nicholas Brown Prize in Medieval Studies from the Medieval Academy of America. His current book project, titled "O Beastly Jew!" investigates the ways Jewish and Christian authors and artists differentiated between humans and animals during the Middle Ages. Shyovitz has contributed numerous publications to the field, addressing themes of monstrosity and Jewish history.
