Professor Dr. David Smeulders

Biography

David Smeulders is a Full Professor in the section of Energy Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Holding a PhD in Physics from TU/e, his thesis focused on wave propagation in saturated and partially saturated porous media. His research interests encompass transport in porous media, gas dynamics, thermodynamics, acoustics, and hydraulic fracturing, with a particular focus on the microscale interface processes and their applications in energy systems. He explores innovative sustainable energy solutions, including hybrid Photovoltaic/Thermal systems and heat storage systems. Smeulders has held prior positions as an Assistant and Associate Professor in Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics at Delft University of Technology. He has also contributed as a visiting professor at Ben-Gurion University in Israel. Actively involved in the academic community, he serves on several scientific and advisory committees, delivering lectures at key international conferences. His educational engagements include teaching courses on the introduction to porous media and the role of water in geological processes.
