Dr. David Smith

Biography

David R. Smith is currently the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. He is also the Director of the Center for Metamaterials and Integrated Plasmonics. Smith's research interests revolve around the theory, simulations, and experimentation of novel electromagnetic metamaterials across various spectra, including microwave and optical applications. His work has led to significant advancements in the photonic aspects of metamaterials, notably in the areas of cloaking and negative index media. Smith has been involved in notable experiments that illustrated the capabilities of these materials, such as demonstrating the first left-handed metamaterial at microwave frequencies. He has published extensively, with more than 3,000 citations to his work, reflecting his influence in this rapidly evolving field. Additionally, Smith has held adjunct and visiting professor roles at institutions including the University of California, San Diego, and Imperial College London. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at UC San Diego in 1994, and his educational background includes a B.S. in Physics from the same institution.
