Dr. David Sorfa

Biography

David Sorfa is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh and the editor-in-chief of the journal Film-Philosophy. His academic focus lies primarily in film-philosophy, existentialism, and phenomenology, with particular interests in the works of filmmakers like Michael Haneke and themes such as surrealism and belief cinema. Sorfa directs the MSc and PhD programs in Film Studies and has previously served as the Head of Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent and an MA from the University of Cape Town. Sorfa has a strong background in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, covering topics including film theory, cinematic aesthetics, and the relationship between film and existential thought. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has served on various academic committees and holds memberships in several professional organizations related to film and screen studies. His ongoing research explores the intersections between fiction, imagination, and existentialism, contributing to scholarly discourse within the field of film studies.
