Biography

David Spiegel is a Professor and the Jack, Lulu and Sam Willson Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of the Center for Stress and Health and the Medical Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Spiegel has over 40 years of clinical research experience specializing in psycho-oncology, stress health, pain control, and psychoneuroendocrinology. His extensive research includes randomized clinical trials involving psychotherapy for cancer patients and therapeutic hypnosis. He has published thirteen books and over 404 scientific journal articles alongside numerous book chapters. Dr. Spiegel has received significant research support from national health institutions such as the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Cancer Institute. He has served as a member of the American Psychiatric Association’s work groups for the DSM editions and is a past President of both the American College of Psychiatrists and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. His current research interests include the relationship between psychological stress and cancer progression, as well as sleep disturbances and their effects on breast cancer survival. Dr. Spiegel continues to be an invited speaker at prominent events, such as the World Economic Forum.
