Biography

David Tamayo is an assistant professor specializing in modern Latin American history at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the interplay of right-wing politics, middle classes, and Latin America's role in a global context. Currently, he is writing a book tentatively titled "Laboratories of Conservatism: Service Clubs, Mexican Middle Classes, and the Making of the PRI's Golden Age," which explores the conservative classes and elites in Mexico during an era marked by revolutionary radicalism and the Institutional Revolutionary Party's conservative pivot from the 1920s to the 1950s. He describes how the middle and upper classes in Mexico organized independently through international service clubs, such as Rotary and Lions Clubs, which offered social refuge for disaffected elites and were used to foster grassroots conservatism. Tamayo is dedicated to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and has previously taught English as a Second Language to adults and mentored underserved high school students in Southern California. At the University of Michigan, he aims to leverage his experiences to contribute to the promotion of diversity and inclusion within the academic environment.
