Biography

Professor David J. Thomson is a professorial fellow in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. He holds a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and is a leader in the pioneering research area of photonics computing applications, particularly in LIDAR technology. With over £10 million in funding, he leads a team of 12 research associates and PhD students in the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel photonics devices and circuits with electronic functionality. His work is internationally recognized, especially for high-speed optical modulators, with notable achievements including the demonstration of a 50Gbit/s optical modulator for silicon frontend integration and CMOS drive electronics able to operate at speeds of 100Gbaud. Professor Thomson has authored over 85 journal papers and 185 conference publications, including more than 90 invited contributions, and has filed 18 patents. He is actively involved in several conference committees, including SPIE Photonics West and IEEE Group IV Photonics.
