Biography

David Traum is a Research Professor in the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern California (USC). He directs the Natural Language Research Institute at the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) and leads the Natural Language Dialogue Group. His research focuses on dialogue communication between humans and artificial agents, employing both theoretical and empirical approaches to explore problems in human-human and human-computer dialogue. Traum has contributed to building various dialogue systems that range from simple command-and-control systems to full mixed-initiative collaborative planning interactions. His major research interests include the 'grounding' problem in communication which involves understanding the steps necessary to improve mutual understanding in dialogue. He has authored around 300 refereed technical articles, served as the founding editor of the Journal of Dialogue and Discourse, and has held leadership roles in various academic conferences., Traum earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Rochester in 1994.
