Biography

David Williamson is a Professor in the Department of Information Science at Cornell University, where he has been since 2004. He serves as the Director of the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering. After earning his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, he joined IBM Research, eventually becoming a Senior Manager in the Computer Science Principles Methodologies Department at Almaden Research Center. Williamson's research focuses on approximation algorithms, network science, and algorithmic fairness and discrimination. He is a coauthor of the book 'The Design of Approximation Algorithms' published by Cambridge University Press and has received prestigious awards such as the SIAM DiPrima Prize and the Tucker Prize from the Mathematical Programming Society. His significant contributions also include work with Michel Goemans in semidefinite programming, which earned them the SIAM Activity Group Optimization Prize and the Fulkerson Prize. In addition, he holds fellowships with the Association for Computing Machinery and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Williamson has served as the editor-in-chief of the SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics and has been an associate editor for various journals. His work has greatly influenced the fields of computing and information technology.
