Biography

Dawn Wetzel is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and an Adjunct Faculty member in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the IU School of Medicine in West Lafayette. With over 30 years of clinical experience, her primary expertise encompasses dysphagia diagnosis and treatment. She actively provides clinical education in acute care hospitals and instructs the Medical Speech-Language Pathology course. Ms. Wetzel serves as a faculty advisor for the Purdue University SLHS Student Advocacy Council and holds the position of Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy with the Indiana Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA). Her association with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) includes involvement in several leadership and advisory committees. Wetzel's educational background includes a Master of Arts degree from Indiana University, which she obtained in 1987. Her research interests lie in the areas of adult swallowing/dysphagia, medical speech-language pathology, interprofessional education/collaboration, and advocacy/public policy. She has been recognized with multiple awards for her exceptional contributions to teaching and clinical practice, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
