Dean Karlen is the R.M. Pearce Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Victoria and TRIUMF, specializing in Experimental Particle Physics. He has been actively engaged in particle physics experiments since the 1980s, beginning with the Mark-II experiment at SLAC in the USA. In the 1990s, he was involved in the OPAL experiment at CERN, Switzerland, focusing on the standard model of particle physics with high-energy electron-positron collisions. In the early 2000s, he spearheaded efforts to develop a new type of precision detector, the micropattern Time Projection Chamber, for future linear electron-positron colliders. Karlen is a recognized leader in neutrino research and has contributed significantly to the T2K long baseline neutrino experiment in Japan. He has also served as the director of the Victoria Subatomic Physics Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA) from 2011 to 2017 and was previously a professor at Carleton University in Ottawa. Karlen's dedication to advancing particle physics research is evident through his leadership on several innovative projects and collaborations throughout his career. He has received numerous accolades, including the Research Achievement Award from Carleton University and recognition as one of Thomson Scientific’s Highly Cited Researchers.
