Dr. Dean Mobbs

Biography

Dean Mobbs is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Director of the Caltech Brain Imaging Center. He holds the Allen V.C. Davis Lenabelle Davis Leadership Chair and has been with Caltech since 2016, initially serving as an Assistant Professor before being promoted to Professor in 2020. He received his B.S. from the University of Birmingham in 1999 and his Ph.D. from University College London in 2008. Mobbs leads a research laboratory focused on the intersection of behavioral ecology, economics, emotion, and social psychology. His research employs novel brain-imaging and computational modeling techniques to investigate the neurobiological systems underlying fear and anxiety, contributing to a better understanding of human social and emotional experiences. Mobbs was awarded the APS Janet Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions in 2015 and has been recognized as a Chen Scholar since 2019. He continues to actively engage in research with implications for public policy and mental health, most recently investigating how the brain responds to virtual environments.
