Biography

Dean Neikirk is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, holding the Cullen Trust Higher Education Endowed Professorship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within the Cockrell School of Engineering. His current research focuses on the development of integrated circuit fabrication techniques for the creation of new transducers. Recently, his work has led to breakthroughs in chemical sensors, particularly in the design of a new class of devices known as an 'electronic tongue,' which has applications in medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Neikirk's research group is also involved in advancing sensors for structural health monitoring, including the development of new passive RF tags that can detect damage in buildings and bridges subjected to extreme conditions, such as earthquake-induced weld failures in steel-framed buildings. Additionally, he has contributed to the modification of existing electronic article surveillance technology to produce low-cost devices capable of wireless transmission of binary information regarding the state of underlying structures. His extensive experience includes working on high-frequency electromagnetic properties of integrated circuit interconnects and microwave transmission lines.
