Biography

Dean is currently completing a PhD thesis under the supervision of Professor Helen Carr, which examines the phenomenon of property guardianship. Originating from the Netherlands as a 'meanwhile' and transient form of housing, property guardianship has become a significant area of legal attention in England's private rented sector, where it is often an expensive solution for individuals. His research explores critical doctrinal questions about ownership and possession in the contemporary legal landscape, particularly in light of seminal cases related to residential accommodation in the late 20th century. The thesis investigates how property guardianship intersects with property law and the role of the neoliberal state in shaping vacant spaces. Dean has published a series of articles analyzing court decisions in the Journal of Housing Law and has forthcoming work in the Northern Ireland Law Quarterly. He teaches a range of subjects in the LLB program and is a member of the Centre for People and Property based in the Law School, as well as research groups focused on Private Commercial Law and Property and Land Law.
