Deana Jovanović is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Utrecht University, specializing in the impact of urban industrial transformations on societies, particularly in post-Yugoslav contexts. Her research investigates how individuals and societies contest and shape their futures in late-industrial urban environments. With over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork, her expertise spans themes of political anthropology, post-socialist studies, and the interactions of capitalism with social and environmental struggles. She has authored the forthcoming book, “Staging Promises: Everyday Future-Making in a Serbian Industrial Town,” which explores how futures are produced and contested within various material sites. Her work contributes to a deeper understanding of the ramifications of power dynamics in everyday life and how they relate to urban infrastructures and environmental risks. Jovanović is a member of the Sovereignty Social Contestation (SoSCo) research group and has held multiple postdoctoral positions across institutions in Germany, the UK, and Croatia prior to her current role at Utrecht University.
