Dr. Deanna Gates

Biography

Deanna Gates is a Professor in the Movement Science and Biomedical Engineering departments at the University of Michigan and serves as the Graduate Program Director in Movement Science. She also directs the Rehabilitation Biomechanics Laboratory. With an academic background that includes a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, her research is centered on improving the functional quality of life for individuals with musculoskeletal impairments. Her work explores the factors influencing a person’s ability to successfully use assistive technology, focusing on optimal training methods and the development of outcome measures for assessing technological success. Her research has been published in top peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Biomechanics and Science Translational Medicine, and her contributions are recognized through various grants from the Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. Gates is an active member of professional organizations including the American Society of Biomechanics and the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. She imparts her knowledge through teaching biomechanics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
