Biography

Deb received a B.Sc. Hons degree in physics from the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand in 1979 and a Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of St Andrews, Scotland in 1984. She served as a postdoctoral fellow at Southampton University, UK from 1984-1986 and as a lecturer in physics at Massey University, NZ from 1986-1989. In 1989, she moved to Australia and joined Macquarie University where she established semiconductor laser research and designed, developed, and delivered curriculum content for senior units in the newly established Bachelor of Technology in Optoelectronics degree. With a balanced research and teaching career at Macquarie University, she was awarded a Personal Chair in Physics in 2005 and served as Head of the Department of Physics from 2003 to 2006. Deb was also a member of the Macquarie University Council from 2010 to 2017 and joined ANU as an Honorary Professor in 2022. Her research focuses on tailoring and understanding diverse dynamical outputs from semiconductor lasers, laser material interactions, and the optical properties of micro-optic elements. She has edited and co-edited four books and published over 250 research outputs, including approximately 100 refereed journal publications. Deb has held several leadership roles in professional organizations and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics and an Optica Fellow.
