Biography

Debapriya Chakrabarti is a Lecturer in Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture, where she leads the PRAXIS Atelier. Her research focuses on the role of infrastructure in shaping socio-spatial practices, particularly in marginalized communities in the Global South. Debapriya wrote her doctoral dissertation on the cultural heritage and implications of the Durga Puja festival in Kolkata, emphasizing the caste-based idol-making community in the Kumartuli area of inner-city Kolkata, India. She has previously worked as an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Manchester and is a member of the Complexity, Planning Urbanism Lab. Currently, she teaches the M Arch Year 2 and runs a Research Methods Workshop for M Arch Year 1, MLA, and MLAR students. She is also involved in teaching BA1 studio courses and promoting positive intersectional feminist debate within the school. Additionally, Debapriya serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Architecture as essays and reviews editor. She obtained her PhD in Architecture from the University of Manchester, with prior degrees including a Master's in City Planning from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and a Bachelor's in Architecture from Biju Patnaik University of Technology, India.
