Biography

Debbie M. Cheng holds a ScD in Biostatistics from Harvard University and is a Professor at Boston University School of Public Health, where she also serves as the Assistant Dean for Data Science and the founding Executive Director of the Center for Health Data Science. Her research focuses on applied statistics with an emphasis on the design and analysis of clinical trials, and she collaborates with investigators from various locations on studies within the realms of substance abuse and HIV. As an Associate Director of the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and Co-Director of the Biostatistics Core, Dr. Cheng has taken on leadership roles in several pivotal research initiatives, including serving as the lead statistician for the Massachusetts site of the HEALing Communities Study, a large multi-site randomized trial aimed at reducing opioid-related overdose deaths across four states. She is actively involved in teaching, with courses such as Introduction to Statistical Computing and Design and Conduct of Clinical Trials. Over her career, Dr. Cheng has received numerous teaching awards for her outstanding contributions and has been elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
