Biography

After completing her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1996, Debbie worked across various health and welfare settings providing support to vulnerable children, young people, and families. In 2001, she managed research projects for government and non-government organizations, including Carers Australia and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Currently, she is affiliated with the Australian National University where she conducts qualitative research on sensitive issues affecting young carers, adoption, child and youth homelessness, and children impacted by parental substance abuse and family violence. Throughout her career, Debbie has developed innovative participatory research methodologies aimed at sensitively exploring the lives of vulnerable children and influencing policy and practice in the domain of child safety and well-being. She has extensive experience in providing professional development in child safety and child-centred practice and has taught various units in the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees at Australian Catholic University. In 2017, she completed her PhD focused on vulnerable children's perceptions and experiences of loss. From 2018 to 2023, Debbie worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at ANU on an ARC Discovery study examining 'lactation loss'.
