Professor Debby Bogaert has been part of the Centre for Inflammation Research since September 2016. Before this, she worked as a physician-scientist at the Department of Pediatric Immunology at UMC Utrecht, where she pursued ecological studies focusing on the upper respiratory tract microbiome and the pathogenesis and prevention of respiratory infections. Her work has contributing significantly to understanding how early life microbiome, particularly gut and respiratory microbiome, interacts with environmental factors and host immunity, thereby influencing health outcomes. She has led translational research employing epidemiological, molecular, immunological, and systems biology approaches, culminating in an extensive body of mechanistic studies both in vitro and in vivo. Professor Bogaert holds a PhD degree from Erasmus University Rotterdam, obtained cum laude, and has been awarded various accolades including the Scottish Senior Clinical Fellowship and Dutch NWO grants. She has a keen interest in the prevention and treatment of respiratory infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as children. Throughout her career, she has trained numerous PhD students and contributed to the scientific community through collaborative efforts with numerous prestigious institutions.
