Dr. Debmalya Mandal

Biography

Debmalya Mandal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Harvard University and subsequently pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the Data Science Institute of Columbia University and the Max Planck Institute of Software Systems. His research interests lie in the theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning systems. He incorporates tools from computational social choice and game theory, focusing on the development of algorithms that ensure fairness in decision-making processes. His current work explores various research directions, including designing reinforcement learning algorithms that accommodate multiple objectives, particularly in the context of recommender systems, and aligning large AI/ML systems to achieve desirable outcomes. He seeks prospective students with a strong background in Theoretical Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics, who are interested in engaging in his research.
