Biography

Deborah Balmer is a Research Fellow at the Western Australian Centre for Rural Health (WACRH). She completed her PhD at the University of Waikato, focusing on health literacy and the contextual mediation of patient texts. Her research employs ethnographic methods to investigate health-related areas including health literacy practices within clinical settings, aged care, and issues surrounding end-of-life care. She has worked on qualitative health research that addresses topics such as polypharmacy, health education, and dementia care among rural carers. Additionally, Deborah is currently involved in the Clinical Yarning research project based in Western Australia's Midwest. She has a diverse educational background including a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Christchurch Teachers' College and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the University of Otago, as well as a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics (TESOL).
