Biography

Deborah Kay Burand is a Professor of Law Emerita at New York University School of Law, where she served as the Faculty Director of the Grunin Center for Law and Social Entrepreneurship. She is an expert in areas such as clinical legal education innovations, impact investing, law development, and social finance innovation. Burand was the founding director of the International Transactions Clinic and has lectured extensively on social impact bonds, microfinance, and sustainable business practices. Before joining NYU, she co-founded the International Transactions Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School and held a position as general counsel at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Additionally, Burand has experience working in the microfinance sector and served as a senior attorney at the Federal Reserve Board and the Department of the Treasury. She earned her JD/MSFS degree with honors from Georgetown University and a cum laude BA from DePauw University. Burand has been recognized for her teaching, receiving multiple awards including the Distinguished Teaching Award from NYU School of Law.
