Biography

Deborah Carlson is a professor at Texas A&M University, holding the Sara W. George O. Yamini Endowed Family Chair in Nautical Archaeology. She serves as the President of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and is the Nautical Program Coordinator. With a focus on Greek and Roman archaeology and ancient seafaring, she earned her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004. Her research includes classical archaeological studies and participation in excavations across the Mediterranean, including significant projects in Greece and Italy. Notably, she has worked on excavations of Classical Greek shipwrecks including the fifth-century B.C. shipwreck at Tektaş Burnu, Turkey. Carlson is passionate about teaching and presents undergraduate courses on Greek and Roman archaeology, nautical archaeology, and Latin, along with a graduate seminar on Classical Seafaring. Her archaeological work has garnered funding from organizations such as the Archaeological Institute of America and National Geographic. She has co-published proceedings on maritime trade studies and is currently overseeing the final publication of her research on the Tektas Burnu shipwreck.
