Dr. Deborah Chinn

Biography

Deborah works part-time as a lecturer and researcher, alongside her role as an NHS clinical psychologist within a community team focusing on individuals with intellectual disabilities. Her primary research interests include access to health information and health services, health inequalities, and the social determinants of health. She has conducted significant research using the concept of health literacy, including her development of the Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS), which has been translated into over ten languages and utilized globally. Her research methodologies include surveys, secondary data analysis, qualitative interviews, and video observations, particularly emphasizing qualitative techniques like discourse and conversation analysis. Deborah's work has influenced service design, policy formation, and training for health practitioners. She is particularly focused on mental health interventions, health communication, and the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing appropriate health services.
