Dr. Deborah Cohen

Biography

Deborah Cohen, Richard W. Leopold Professor of History at Northwestern University, holds a Ph.D. from Berkeley, awarded in 1996. An expert in modern Britain and Europe, her research spans methodological approaches and has a focus on comparative history and biography. Cohen has contributed significantly to the understanding of Anglo-Argentines and family capitalism, as well as the impact of American foreign correspondents. She has published numerous works that encompass a wide array of thematic interests, including state and society relations, public history, material culture, and the intersection of private lives with historical narratives. Her notable publications include *Call Hotel Imperial: Reporters Took World War* (2022), which received acclaim from the New Yorker, NPR, and Vanity Fair, and *War Come Home: Disabled Veterans Britain Germany, 1914-1939*, honored with the Allan Sharlin Prize. Cohen's works have also won various prestigious awards, including the Forkosch Prize from the American Historical Association, and she has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2018. In addition to her teaching and research, she serves on the editorial board of *Past & Present* and co-edits a series for Cambridge University Press.
