Biography

Deborah DeMott is an accomplished legal scholar and educator, focusing on law agency, business organizations, fiduciary obligation, and art law. She served as the sole Reporter for the American Law Institute’s Restatement (Third) Agency, published in 2006, and is the author of the treatise 'Shareholder Derivative Actions,' first published in 1987 and updated annually. In addition to her books, DeMott has authored numerous articles in her areas of specialization and edited a work on liability for asset managers published by Oxford University Press in 2012. A native of DuBois, Pennsylvania, she received her BA from Swarthmore College in 1970 and her JD from New York University in 1973, where she was the articles editor for the law review. DeMott joined the faculty at Duke Law School in 1975 after completing a federal clerkship and practicing at a large law firm in New York City. She has been recognized with Duke University’s Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award in 1989 and has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions across the globe, including the London School of Economics and various universities in Australia, Texas, Colorado, and Canada. DeMott has also been a Fulbright Senior Scholar and has taught in many prominent law schools.
