Biography

Deborah Hasin is a distinguished professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Since receiving her PhD in Epidemiology from Columbia University in 1986, she has made significant contributions to the understanding of drug use, drug use disorders, and psychiatric comorbidity in large population groups, including veterans. Deborah directs the Substance Dependence Research Group in the Department of Translational Epidemiology and is the founding director of the NIDA-funded Substance Abuse Epidemiology Training Program (SAETP). Her research interests focus on the impact of medical and recreational marijuana laws, opioid use, and the psychiatric medication needs of Veterans Administration patients. She has been continuously funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism since 1990, with an extensive publication record of over 550 papers addressing issues such as cannabis use, alcohol use disorders, and the relationship between substance use and psychiatric disorders.
