Biography

Deborah Tan Hung is a Professor in the field of Genetics at Harvard University. Her research focuses on understanding the emergence of bacterial strains that are resistant to antibiotics, which is occurring at a rate that exceeds the ability to develop novel therapies for treating infections. She aims to advance methodologies used to diagnose infections and predict appropriate treatments, advocating for innovative approaches in the understanding and treatment of infectious diseases. The Hung laboratory investigates the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and identifies essential functions required for bacterial survival in vivo, as well as developing tools for rapid diagnosis of antibiotic susceptibility. The lab employs a range of techniques including chemical biology, bacterial genetics/genomics, high-throughput screens, genomic characterization, and various in vivo models to explore host-pathogen interactions and the responses to antibiotic stress. Her goal is to contribute to new paradigms for addressing infectious diseases by merging concepts from different scientific disciplines and developing novel strategies for intervention.
