Biography

Deborah Lee is a researcher and lecturer in Library Information Studies, focusing on knowledge organization, cataloguing, and classification. She has particular expertise in music classification and has published numerous articles analyzing models of music organization. Her work looks at facets of music and the concept of musical genre, contemplating how the music domain organizes knowledge. Deborah engages with questions surrounding classification schemes, including the ethical implications of cataloguing creative works. She studies art knowledge organization and critically examines cataloguing practices, ensuring they align with contemporary understanding. Deborah leads modules in knowledge organization and cataloguing classification, serving as a personal tutor and dissertation supervisor while actively participating in teaching activities. She joined the Department of Information Studies at University College London in October 2020, having previously spent years working as a professional librarian, where she served as the joint acting head of a small university library and a senior cataloguer. In addition to her teaching and research roles, Deborah is the Programme Director for the MA Library Information Studies and chairs the Library and Resources Committee. She will take on the role of PGTA Academic Tutor for the Department of Information Studies from 2021 to 2024 and has been the Admissions Tutor for the MA Library Information Studies from 2023-2024.
