Biography

Deborah Perlstein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Boston University. She has been a faculty member since July 2010 and has extensive experience in the interface of chemistry and biology, primarily focusing on bioinorganic chemistry. Her research involves developing new projects using chemical biology tools, biophysical techniques, enzymology, and microscopy to understand the role of iron-sulfur cluster-containing proteins in bacterial cell division. Perlstein’s lab aims to elucidate novel chemical mechanisms utilized by enzymes with iron-sulfur clusters and the biochemical pathways required for iron-sulfur cluster assembly in vivo. Additionally, her research addresses the dynamics of bacterial cytoskeletal proteins, which may represent potential antibiotic targets. Perlstein has a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science from Tulane University. She has received significant funding for her research from agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
