Biography

Deborah Spitz is a distinguished professor and psychiatric educator with over 40 years of experience in the field of psychiatry. She trained at the University of Chicago, where she has remained a faculty member focusing on phenomenology and psychodynamic psychotherapy. From 1988 to 2000, she served as the inpatient unit director and director of residency training at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. In 2000, she relocated to Norwich, England, where she worked as a consultant psychiatrist for the National Health Service and eventually became the lead clinician in the redesign of mental health services for 175,000 adults, while also teaching at the University of East Anglia. She returned to the University of Chicago in 2003 and took on the role of Director of Residency Training Education Mission, overseeing medical student education and psychology programs. Throughout her career, she has contributed significantly to professional activities, served as president of the Association of Academic Psychiatry, and has participated in various committees within the American Psychiatric Association. Her major clinical interests include psychodynamic psychotherapy, mood disorders, and women's mental health.
