Biography

Dr. Debra Hamer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Queen's University. She completed her Honors Bachelor’s degree in Arts with a focus on Semiotics and Communication Theory at the University of Toronto and pursued her medical training at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, where she completed her psychiatry residency. Currently, she serves as a clinician-educator at Queen's University, actively involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr. Hamer is the acting Director of the Psychiatry Clerkship Course and her research interests include the integration of humanities into medical education and physician wellness. She has received numerous awards for her contributions to medical education, including the Early Career Development Award from the Association of Academic Psychiatry (AAP) in 2023, the AAP Fellowship Award in 2014, and the provincial PARO Resident Teaching Award in 2014. In 2019, Dr. Hamer was recognized with the Queen’s Department of Psychiatry Award for Excellence in Teaching and received the Aesculapian Society Lectureship Award in 2021 and 2022. She is the 2024 winner of the Canadian Association for Medical Education Meridith Marks New Educator Award, a significant honor for individuals in Canada who have made notable contributions to medical education early in their careers.
