Biography

Declan O'Regan is a British Heart Foundation Chair in Cardiovascular AI and a MRC Investigator Consultant Radiologist. He leads the Computational Cardiac Imaging Group at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences and serves as Director of Imaging Research at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is a theme co-lead at the Imperial College BHF Centre of Research Excellence and is committed to science engagement, having lectured internationally on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. His past roles include being a board member of the British Society of Cardiac MR and currently chairs its Publications Committee. Declan is also a member of the MRC Clinical Training Career Development Panel and works as Associate Editor for the European Heart Journal - Cardiovascular Imaging while being a Guest Editor for Circulation. His research focuses on using machine learning to discover mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease, integrating data from human imaging, genetics, and environmental risk factors. His work includes developing algorithms to predict human survival based on cardiac motion and understanding complex traits influencing the risk of heart failure. He collaborates with industry to expedite drug discovery, utilizing automated genotype-phenotype modelling. His research is supported by the Medical Research Council, British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, National Institutes of Health, Calico Labs, and Bayer AG.
