Biography

Deepak Adhikari is a group leader at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. He obtained his PhD from Umeå University in 2014, focusing on the regulation of primordial follicle development in the mammalian ovary. His research uncovered signaling pathways essential for controlling the quiescence and activation of primordial follicles, which are crucial for maintaining the ovarian reserve and reproductive lifespan in females. Following his PhD, Deepak joined Monash University as a postdoctoral fellow, where he has investigated the biogenesis of mitochondria in oocytes and their roles in controlling oocyte and embryo development. His research underscores the significance of oocyte quality in female fertility and its implications for the health of offspring. Currently, his group is exploring mitochondrial functions and energy production in oocytes and embryos. Deepak's work is essential given that oocyte growth occurs in parallel with ovarian follicle development, which directly affects women's health and fertility. His findings aim to inform therapies that could help preserve follicle growth and mitigate the severe long-term consequences of early follicle loss in women.
