Biography

Defne Över is a political sociologist whose research employs a cultural lens to examine media, legal institutions, social movements, and the construction of legitimacy in contemporary contexts of autocratization. Her current book project, "Boundaries Divide: Journalists Turkey Surrendered Power Politics," investigates how Turkey's news media became an accomplice in the country's democratic backsliding rather than serving as a check on power. Över's work draws on a combination of participant observation, interviews, and surveys and has been published in various academic journals, including PLOS Law, Social Inquiry, Social Legal Studies, Media, Culture & Society, Current Sociology, and Research in Social Movements, Conflicts and Change. As an assistant professor at Texas A&M University, she teaches courses in political sociology and social movements.
