Biography

Deidre Butler’s research operates at the intersections of religion, ethics, and feminist thought. Her doctoral work developed Jewish feminist ethical frameworks in dialogue with modern Jewish thought, asserting the integration of women’s historical experiences. Currently, her research program examines modern Jewish life and thought, providing a critique of how philosophical and cultural narratives obscure or disconnect from the lived, particular, gendered, and embodied experiences of individuals. Butler’s research utilizes a variety of evidence types, including original ethnographic data and artistic responses. She taught for several years at Concordia University in the Religion and Women’s Studies programs before joining Carleton University. Additionally, she serves as the Director of the Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies and holds academic chairs in the Developing Leadership Program at the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship.
