Deirdre Gleeson completed her PhD in Biotechnology in 2001 and is currently based at the University of Western Australia in the School of Agriculture and Environment. Her research aims to link microbial community structure and function, which is central to modern microbial ecology. Deirdre focuses on using molecular approaches, particularly environmental DNA, to study a variety of natural and managed microbial ecosystems in both terrestrial and aquatic biomes. Her key contributions revolve around the diversity and function of microorganisms impacted by their surrounding habitat at both the microscale and landscape scale. She places particular emphasis on the use of novel molecular biology technologies to enhance biodiversity assessments. Deirdre also plays significant roles in academia, serving as a Senior Fellow and Chair on the Education Committee at UWA and is involved in PhD supervision. Her teaching includes courses on Environmental Science Technology, Environmental Quality, and Contaminated Soils and Groundwater.
