Deirdre MacManus is a Clinical Reader and Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at Camden Islington NHSFT and King's College London. Her current research interests include psychological trauma, particularly complex trauma, and the diagnosis and treatment of Complex PTSD. She seeks to understand the sequelae in forensic populations and practices trauma-informed care. Deirdre has a special interest in military trauma and mental health, having conducted research with King’s Centre for Military Health Research focusing on domestic abuse within the military community. She has received funding from the Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research, and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. Deirdre co-leads the Forensic Research Group and is a module leader for the Forensic Mental Health MSc, supervising PhD and MSc-level research students. She has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Edinburgh and completed her general psychiatry training in Northern Ireland, followed by specialist training in Forensic Psychiatry at Maudsley Hospital, London, where she also undertook a PhD in psychological trauma and antisocial behavior in the UK military. Deirdre is also involved in several advisory panels and has contributed to the development of clinical pathways related to traumatic stress in various contexts, including prisons in Wales and global organizations addressing mental health challenges.
