Biography

Demetra Kasimis is a political theorist specializing in ancient Greek political thought, contemporary political theory, and feminist theory, with a particular focus on democracy. She received her B.A. from Columbia University, where she studied philosophy and Modern Greek literature. After graduation, she moved to Athens as a Fulbright scholar, researching the experiences of Albanian migrants in Greece. She returned to Columbia for her M.A. in philosophy and went on to complete her PhD in political science at Northwestern University. Her postdoctoral fellowship was at Yale, and she subsequently worked as an assistant professor at California State University, Long Beach. At the University of Cambridge, she works in the Department of Politics and International Studies, engaging with graduate students and supervising MPhil and PhD theses around ancient democracy, classical Greek political thought, and feminist theory. Her published book, 'The Perpetual Immigrant: Limits of Athenian Democracy' (CUP, 2018), highlights the often overlooked connections between immigration practices and democratic theory in ancient Athens. She is currently researching the intersection of feminist theory and political action through her project on the archetype of Cassandra.
