Dr. Denis Bachand

Biography

Denis Bachand is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa, where he has been a faculty member since 1980. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in French Studies at the Université de Sherbrooke in 1971, followed by a Master of Arts in 1973 with a thesis on nostalgia in literature. He earned his Ph.D. in 1980, focusing on the psycho-sociology of representation, with a thesis that critically examined the epistemological foundations of communication. Throughout his career, he has engaged in teaching and research that explore the intersections of arts, culture, and media. His research interests are particularly centered on identity representation in Canadian Quebec cinema and the influences of different ethnocultural elements within this context. He has chaired the Department of Communication during four different terms and contributed to significant research projects, including topics related to the reception of Quebec cinema abroad and the interplay between literature and cinema in Quebec. Professor Bachand has published extensively on various subjects, including comics, advertising, and new media, and has been involved in leadership roles within research groups dedicated to the study of cinema and its social implications.
