Biography

Denis Bilodeau specializes in the history and theory of architecture. He obtained his Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and his M.Phil. from Columbia University in New York. His research focuses on the cultural and cognitive dimensions of contemporary architectural project practices and the epistemology of architectural design. He has examined the roles of precedents, typology, analogy, schematization, abstraction, serial approaches, and the figures of myth and utopia in architectural conception. Co-founder of the Potential Architecture Laboratory (L.E.A.P.) at the Université de Montréal in 2002, he has contributed to the establishment of the Catalogue of Canadian Architecture Competitions (CCC) and has an interest in the role of architectural competitions in shaping contemporary collective imaginaries. He was also the curator of the exhibition 'Architecture Competitions and Territorial Imaginaries: Cultural Projects in Quebec 1991-2005,' which won the first prize at the Grafika 2009 awards for best museology.
