Biography

Denis Lalanne is the director of the Human-IST institute and a full professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Fribourg. He leads the 'human-building interaction' group within the Smart Living Lab and represents Switzerland in the IFIP TC13. After earning a PhD at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) focused on computer-aided creativity, Denis completed a post-doc at the IBM Almaden Research Center and spent a year teaching and researching at the University of Avignon. He joined the University of Fribourg in 2002 to work on the PRN IM2 of the National Science Foundation as a senior researcher, eventually becoming a professor in 2015 specializing in human-computer interaction. In 2017, he founded the Human-IST institute, developing its mission ever since. His research explores various aspects of human-computer interaction, particularly multimodal interaction and information visualization. Recently, his work has focused on understanding and improving occupant comfort in buildings and applying human-AI interaction to enhance teamwork or support accessibility and rehabilitation.
