Biography

Denise Bélanger is a retired professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal, specializing in the epidemiology of wildlife diseases and zoonoses. She has significantly advanced knowledge in animal epidemiology, particularly concerning small ruminants, environmental health, and public veterinary health. From 2007, she chaired the interministerial scientific committee on raccoon rabies, a health crisis mitigated through a coordinated campaign of monitoring, vaccination, and control. She is the founder of the Research Group on Epidemiology of Zoonoses and Public Health and has developed decision-support tools for public health, especially concerning Lyme disease and the West Nile virus. From 2010 to 2014, she led the Department of Pathology and Microbiology and was recruited as a professor in 1990. Bélanger also played a pivotal role in establishing several microprograms in veterinary public health and has supervised various graduate thesis projects in epidemiology. She retired in June 2018.
