Dr. Denise Costanzo

Biography

Denise Costanzo is an associate professor, architectural historian, and theorist specializing in the cultural dimensions of architecture and art history. Her research focuses on the exchange of American and European architectural ideas, particularly in the context of Italy, and examines the mechanisms of architectural power in the 20th century. Costanzo employs various scholarly methods, including visual analysis, textual critique, and social historiography, to explore significant topics in architectural history. She has presented her work at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University and the American Academy in Rome and has contributed to numerous scholarly publications, including articles in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. In 2016, she published 'Architecture Means: Connecting Ideas to Design' with Routledge and co-edited 'Italian Imprints Twentieth Century Architecture' in 2022. Her recent project, 'Modern Architects and the Problem of Postwar Rome,' awarded her the Rome Prize fellowship, explores modernism's transformation in academia post-World War II.
