Dr. Denise Larsen

Biography

Denise J. Larsen is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, where she serves as Associate Dean (Research). With over 31 years of experience in the Faculty of Education, her primary research interest lies in the study of hope in relation to counseling psychology and educational practices. As a registered psychologist and former elementary classroom teacher, she focuses on the role of hope and its effective use in various contexts, including individual, group, and career counseling. Her research utilizes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies, exploring the intentional use of hope in classroom settings and the experiences of hope among children and youth. Over the past two decades, Professor Larsen has collaborated extensively with colleagues and graduate students, contributing to projects both within the University of Alberta and internationally. She has a notable publication record, with works appearing in reputable journals that examine hope's application in therapy and education. Larsen actively guides future scholars in her field, though she is currently not accepting new graduate students for the upcoming academic year.
