Biography

Denise Petzold is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Literature & Art at Maastricht University, affiliated with the Maastricht Centre for Innovation in Classical Music (MCICM) and the Maastricht Centre for Arts, Culture, Conservation, and Heritage (MACCH). She has a background in Science and Technology Studies, contemporary art conservation studies, and museum heritage studies. Her research interests center on the role of technology and science in artistic practice and heritage conservation, including the life cycles of performative artworks, the use of ephemeral materials, and new materialisms. Denise's PhD project, titled 'Archives Change: Art Conservation Studies Approach Innovating Classical Music,' aims to connect classical music with contemporary art conservation practices, rethinking how classical music can be contextualized in meaningful ways for future practitioners. This project tackles the tension between conserving and innovating within a tradition-laden artistic community. She has previously worked as an assistant curator at the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Germany, and completed a research internship at Tate in London, focusing on the impact of documentation on performative artworks. Denise teaches and supervises courses across Bachelor and Master programs in her faculty, including BA Digital Society and MA Arts & Culture.
