Biography

Deniz Bagdas, DVM, PhD, is a Research Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, focusing on behavioral neuropharmacology. His research investigates the role of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in addiction, pain, and inflammation, as well as the causal mechanisms linking chronic pain and addiction. He studies dopaminergic mechanisms related to motivational behaviors and the effects of nicotine constituents on these behaviors, particularly in adolescents and adults. Bagdas assesses ethical implications of his work through his philosophical training, and he currently serves as a co-investigator at the Yale Center for the Study of Tobacco Product Use and Addiction (Yale TCORS). He is also a Principal Investigator of a K01 award aimed at understanding the co-morbidity of chronic pain and nicotine use, with a focus on sex differences to advance personalized cessation strategies for women.
