Deniz Duruiz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University. His research primarily focuses on Kurdish migrant farmworkers and Syrian refugees in Turkey and France. From 2009 to 2016, he conducted extensive ethnographic research in northern Kurdistan, exploring the lived experiences of migrant workers across various rural worksites. During the mass exodus of Syrian refugees to Turkey in 2014-2015, he volunteered as a coordinator for international medical NGOs operating along the Turkish border. Currently, he is working on a book manuscript that examines the political violence and racialization of Kurds and Syrian refugees as they navigate the changing migrant labor regime in rural Turkey. Prior to his tenure at Concordia, Dr. Duruiz held visiting fellowships at McGill University and was a visiting professor at Carleton University. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Program at Northwestern University.
